Richtersveld
Attractions
The Richtersveld Transfrontier Park protects one of the world's few arid biodiversity hotspots, its succulent plants adapted to almost no rainfall, with the Orange River forming the border with Namibia along its northern edge.
Climate
One of the driest and hottest parts of the country by day, cooling sharply after dark.
Activities
4x4 mountain-desert routes, canoeing on the Orange River, and stargazing under some of the darkest skies in the country. The Orange is also home to the largemouth yellowfish, a powerful native fish of the Orange-Vaal system and a favourite with fly and light-tackle anglers. The best months for yellowfish are September to October and April to May. Expeditions Direct takes care of all permits, drift boats and camps.

Orange River Drift with Kalahari Sand
An arid wildlife expedition from the Cape Winelands into two of the country's great deserts. Days tracking predators in the Kalahari, black-maned lions among them, lead to drifting down the Orange River through the Richtersveld after largemouth yellowfish. The Cape's wines are there to look back on it all.
